Big Cat Briefing~8.30.2019

Hey, all you cool cats and kittens, It’s Carole at Big Cat Rescue. Today’s coordinator report is from Lauren Grant who says, Great day, today! Thank you to everyone who was able to come and help today. We managed to get feeding and cleaning done without taking too long. Karma did blood sicles today so Marie could get some Operant Conditioning done. Fred, Dylan, Abby, and I cleaned up Illithia the serval’s enclosure so it’s all ready when she comes home from FunCation. Candy Couser and Bethany Smith did food prep. Fred, Abbey, and Dylan also started on filling sandbags for our possible storm next week. I think that possible storm is called Hurricane Dorian, at this point. We still need quite a few more but it’s a good start. That’s about it. Thanks everyone for a great day!” And that’s from Lauren Grant. Meanwhile, we have taken all the stuff that is sitting around the sanctuary like chairs and tables and things that can fly and have brought them into the building. We are also checking on the cats who might need to be brought in over the weekend. It looks like maybe the hurricane’s moving a little bit slower so we may not have to actually lock up any of the cats who are in the open-air cages until Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully, this thing will just rain itself out and be done before it hits the state of Florida. I know that’s asking a lot, but that is my hope is that nobody suffers from this. I was on a call today with a group, I’m not sure who organized it, it seemed to be a bunch of people from the AZA zoos and the Florida Association of zoos and aquariums and they had sent out an alert to the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and then there were a lot of places on the call that were clearly not AZA, ZAA, or GFAS accredited but the idea was to have everybody pull together the knowledge of who to contact in an emergency. So let them know we have about a hundred and ten cages and only about 55 cats so if anybody does need space for their big cats we, and assuming that we’re not in the worst part of the storm which it looks like we won’t be, we’ll be happy to provide shelter for those cats. We also reached out to previous people who have brought cats to us and said, “Hey we’re here. We can even come pick them up if you need us to. We reached out to some rehabbers as well saying, “If you guys have bobcats there or other exotic cats that need to be sheltered during the storm just let me know we’ll come get them ahead of time. We don’t want to be driving through the hurricane to do it, so please let us know now.” You can see photos and videos of all of our updates at BigCatRescue.org
