Big Cats

From the jungles to the savannas big cats among the world’s most
recognized and revered creatures. Lions are the largest cat species in
Africa and the only true social cat. Taj and Angalia are our
male and female lions. In the pride, the females work together
to hunt and help rear the cubs while the males mark and guard
the pride’s territory. One of the characteristics of the
big cats is its ability to roar. An adult lion’s roar can be
heard up to five miles away. A lion’s roar identifies individuals,
warns off intruders, strengthens the pride’s bond, and
can reunite scattered pride members. Not only is the tiger the largest
species of cat in Asia it’s also the largest feline
species in the world. They can reach lengths of
up to nine feet. At the Alexandria Zoo, we
have two species of tiger, the Malayan tiger which
is highly endangered and our white tigers,
Hannah and Kumar. Although the white is not a
naturally occurring color, they are ambassadors to
their wild counterparts. Of the six remaining tiger species, all are either endangered
or critically endangered. So Hannah and Kumar are not only
some of the zoo visitor favorites But they’re some of the keepers
favorites as well, including mine. I love to come in and watch Kumar
chuff at me every morning. He’s always so happy to see me and they run around the yard,
they play in their pool they like to bat boxes around, and have
a great time laying out in the sun. Bebu and Maderas, or Maddie for short, are our two jaguars here
at Alexandria Zoo. Bebu, our male jaguar,
was orphaned in Panama We were able to import him
and give him a home and he joined the species
survival plan for jaguars. Maddie was born at the San Diego Zoo and so they were paired
together to breed so they’re in the Jaguar Species
Survival Plan breeding program. Jaguars are the largest
cats in the Americas. Ancient civilizations like
the Mayans and Aztecs worshiped these cats because
of their strength and beauty. One beautiful thing about them is
their coats, which have rosettes and they have rosettes whether they’re
the natural color or if they’re black If they are black, they will still
have rosettes if you look close enough. The jaguar strength and agility is shown when they go for a caiman as a prey item. They are very good swimmers and will not hesitate to jump in
the water for a good prey item. The strength, adaptability, and
majesty of the big cats have captured people’s imagination
around the world.
