Feline Rescue Talks National Adopt A Cat Month

THIS IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED TO HEAR. EVERYONE ELSE WAS TOO SLEEPY TO CARE. THIS MONTH IS NATIONAL ADOPT A CAT MONTH. JOINING US IS DANA AND ALICE FROM FELINE RESCUE. GREAT TO HAVE YOU WAS. TELL US ABOUT YOUR GROUP. HOW MANY CATS OR KITTENS ARE USUALLY AVAILABLE? WE HAVE A SHELTER PROGRAM AND A FOSTER PROGRAM. OUR SHELTER PROGRAM HAS UPWARDS OF 70 CATS AT A TIME. FROM APRIL THROUGH SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER WE’LL BE AT FULL CAPACITY. FOSTER PROGRAM HAS 200 KITTENS AND MOMS NOW AND A FEW SPECIAL NEEDS ADULT CATS. IT FEELS LIKE THERE ARE ALWAYS CATS UP FOR ADOPTION. MORE SO THAN DOGS. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS? OVER POPULATION. THERE IS A HUGE EFFORT TO EDUCATE THAT SPAY NEUTER IS A PRIMARY WAY TO STEM THAT OVERPOPULATION. IT HAS MADE A HUGE IMPACT IN MINNESOTA. THERE ARE TWO SPAY NEUTER GROUPS THAT DO THAT ONLY. PEOPLE STILL LET THEIR CATS ARE KITTENS AND THEIR DOGS HAVE PUPPIES. IT IS HARD TO GET ON TOP OF IT. THERE AREN’T ENOUGH HOMES. ONE LITTER OF KITTENS CAN BE HOW MANY? UP TWO SEVEN YEARS, A PAIR OF CATS AND THEIR LITTER CAN PRODUCE UP TO 420,000 CATS IN SEVEN YEARS. THAT’S INCREDIBLE. SO MANY OF THE CATS ARE EUTHANIZED. YES. THESE GUYS WERE ON THE LIST. ONE OF THE BIGGEST SOURCES IS PULLING FROM ANIMAL CONTROL AGENCIES. WINKING IS NOT FEELING GREAT. SHE HAD TO STAY BACK. THEY CAME FROM ST. PAUL ANIMAL CONTROL. THEY WERE CLOSE TO BEING SCRUTINIZED BECAUSE OF SPACE. THERE IS TOO MANY CATS OUT THERE. DO THEY TRAVEL WITH THEIR BLANKETS. SOMETHING PEOPLE DON’T ALWAYS KNOW IS CATS ARE VERY SENSITIVE TO SMELL. THEY LIKE FAMILIARITY. THEY HAVE A BIG ROOM. IT IS LONG AND NARROW. THESE WERE NEAR BLANKETS. IT HAS THEIR SMELLS ON IT. IS THAT WHY THEY ARE CALM? THEY ARE PRETTY WELL. SOME VIEWERS ARE LOOKING AT THESE KITTIES THINKING I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE ONE HOME. WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE KNOW WHO HAS NEVER OWNED A CAT BEFORE? WELL, EVERY CAT HAS A DIFFERENT PERSONALTY. IT IS IMPORTANT TO VISIT WITH THAT CAT BEFORE YOU MAKE THAT DECISION. THESE GUYS, WE ARE TRYING TO ADOPT TOGETHER. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE BONDED PAIRS OR BONDED SETS OF CATS THAT HAVE BEEN TOGETHER A LONG TIME. WHEN YOU HAVE CATS THAT HAVE BEEN TOGETHER YOU DON’T WANT TO SPLIT THEM UP. THAT CAN BE DEVASTATING TO THEM. UNDERSTANDING WHAT A RESPONSIBILITY IT IS TIME WISE AND FINANCIAL WISE IS IMPORTANT. YOU HAVE TO BE READY. WE’D LOVE FOR YOU TO HELP IF YOU CAN. WE HAVE A LINK AT WCCO.COM TO THE FELINE RESCUE WEBSITE TO FIND OUT ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HELPING DURING THIS ADOPT A CAT MONTH.
